Crete is best known for its beaches. It is one of the most populated and popular Greek islands in the country. While much of its history and culture was taken from Grecian past, the islands had created its own indigenous cultural heritage, owing from its cultural history of Minoan civilization.
Nowadays, Crete is best known as the destination in Greece. And Crete’s crowning glory is its magnificent beaches located all around the island. There are many beaches to choose from within the island itself and the following are the most recommended in Crete:
* For a romantic time by the beach, then Crete offers a number of hidden beaches when on the island. The most popular one is called Falasarna Beach located on the northwestern part of the island. Despite its popularity, it has remained quite secluded, offering peace and quiet time by the shoreline for many visitors to the area. Another one is Makriyialos Beach on the southeastern end of the island. This is known for its long beachfront with clear and shallow water, ideal for that long walk on the shoreline enjoying the sun and the sand.
* For a rocking and frolicking beach front experience, then there are also a number of beaches to choose from on the island. The most tourist centered beach on the island is Vai Beach located on the northeastern corner of the island. The area has over five thousand palm trees lining the beach area making for an exotic as well as exquisite backdrop to parties in the evenings. This is why many expats call this Palm Beach and aside from that, the area is known for its sun beds, snorkel and scuba diving spots for the adventure addicts in the area. If you feel to soak up the sights on a taverna or bar by the beach, then the best place would be Aghia Marina near Chania on the island. You can find your spot under the sun with a drink in hand if you choose this area of Crete.
* If you are into history of the place where you are, then there is Frangokastello Beach. This beach is cradle to a large fortress that has defended Crete from many marauders since time immemorial. Aside from this landmark, the beach also boasts of long stretches of sand and clear pristine waters perfect for snorkeling or enjoying the sun. Located on the southern coast of the island, it is one of the major destinations while in Crete.
* Other beaches worth mentioning on the island is Elfonisi Beach on the southwestern part of the island. Within the area is a lagoon where one can wade in the water to other nearby islands, allowing for more adventure and enjoyment for those that visit the area.
As what has been described, all the corners of Crete have beautiful beaches, each with their own personality and natural beauty. Aside from the inland culture and cuisine, one can truly enjoy the beauty that is Crete when one takes of their shoes and wades on its sandy beaches. Take your pick and enjoy Crete at its best.
